Seminar on Property Related Issues of NRIs/PIOs
1.     India, as a rising global economic power, has become a favoured destination for investment from various quarters. ‘Real estate’ in India is a sector of considerable interest, especially to NRIs and PIOs.

2.     NRIs/PIOs are generally not fully equipped with information on the projects, track record of real estate companies/builders/agencies, and grievance redressal mechanism of their property related issues. In a long drawn litigation process, the NRIs/PIOs face the disadvantage of not being able to be present in India for longer durations to pursue their cases.

3.     These have resulted in several references being made to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs from NRIs/PIOs on property related issues e.g. illegal occupation of land/flats/apartments/houses by unscrupulous persons, delayed handing over of the promised flats/apartments by builders/realtors/property dealers, delay in the settlement of related court cases etc.

4.     A seminar to discuss these and other facets of the property related issues is being organized during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) – 2010 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on 7th January 2010. Discussions at the Seminar would include the real estate scenario in India, the role of different government agencies/private enterprises and other stake holders, measures to prevent such disputes and speedy disposal of cases filed in courts in India.

5.     Representatives from NRIs/PIOs Associations and others, police and land-revenue officials of state governments, builders/real estate associations, the Bar Council of India and officials from the central government are among those expected to take part in it.

6.     The seminar would be open to delegates registered for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention 2010.
